At our practice, we care for all of your dental needs. One treatment that we have numerous questions about is the Invisalign system. Although it has been an option to correct misaligned teeth for more than 20 years, Invisalign is more popular than ever.
Our dentist, Dr. Shahkarami, has years of experience with Invisalign and is always happy to answer any questions a patient has about the system. To give you an understanding of the Invisalign basics, here are the most commonly asked questions that our staff hears.
WHAT IS INVISALIGN AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM BRACES?
Invisalign is a unique way to correct various forms of misalignment. It differs from traditional braces because it consists of a clear, thin plastic alignment tray which gently moves your teeth into the correct position in your mouth. Our cosmetic dentist makes an impression of your teeth to create your custom alignment tray. The thin trays slide over your top and bottom teeth. Every two weeks we will provide a new alignment tray for you to wear. Slightly modifying your aligners keeps your teeth moving in the right direction.
With Invisalign, you will have no wires or brackets, and it is virtually unnoticeable. Aside from being discreet, many patients love the fact that they have no eating restrictions, unlike traditional braces which require many changes. You wear your alignment trays approximately 22 hours a day and take the trays out of your mouth when you eat.
Another difference between Invisalign and regular braces is that our patients complete their treatment faster than those with braces. The typical patient with braces wears them for around two years or longer. An Invisalign patient typically completes their regimen in 18 months.
IS INVISALIGN RIGHT FOR EVERYONE?
Dr. Shahkarami rarely needs to advise a patient against Invisalign. However, from time to time, someone will not be a good candidate for the system. Here are a few reasons someone should not get Invisalign.
- If you are a younger teen, Invisalign may not be right for you. However, our staff may recommend Invisalign Teen for you.
- Invisalign aligners cannot move dental implants; patients with implants should not consider Invisalign.
- Large dental bridges often impede alignment trays; however, if you have a smaller bridge, we may be able to work with you.
- If you are considering Invisalign and have more questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact our office. Dr. Shahkarami will gladly evaluate you and explain the process involved with Invisalign.
