Sedation

Sedation

At our dental office, we are continually striving to reduce pain and give our patients the most positive experience possible. We understand that some patients have dental fears and phobias which drastically impact them. Dr. Shahkarami knows how vital regular check-ups and other dental treatments are to our patients’ oral health. Because of this, she has gone the extra mile to receive the appropriate credentials to offer dental sedation in our office. This process involves many hours of training, but helping our patients relax and be free from fear makes this effort worthwhile.

Sedation dentistry recognizes four levels and four methods of dental sedation. Our goal is to safely relax our patients, so a visit to the dentist’s office does not bring about stress or fear. To achieve this goal, the level and the method of sedation will vary based on your overall physical health and your scheduled procedure.

The four levels of sedation used at our office are:

  • MINIMAL SEDATION- This is the gentlest level of sedation; you are conscious but relaxed and free of fear.
  • MODERATE SEDATION – This level is often referred to as ‘conscious sedation’ because you are still marginally awake. Patients receiving moderate sedation frequently fall asleep during their treatment then remember nearly nothing about what took place.
  • DEEP SEDATION – You are nearly unconsciousness, but we can wake you, easily.
  • GENERAL ANESTHESIA- You are completely unconscious.

The four methods of dental sedation are:

  • INHALED SEDATION- With this form of sedation, you breathe in a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide, often called ‘laughing gas.’ You receive the gas through a mask which covers your nose. The gas helps you relax and wears off quickly.
  • ORAL SEDATION-For oral sedation, the dentist gives you the drug Halcion or a derivative of Halcion in pill form. About an hour after receiving the medication you will feel sleepy and relaxed. After the procedure, you will feel groggy.
  • IV SEDATION- You receive medicine into your vein from an intravenous line. This form of sedation dentistry works quickly, and you usually fall asleep. We can wake you reasonably easily when the procedure is over.
  • GENERAL ANESTHESIA- Your medications will make your entirely unconscious. You will wake when the anesthesia wears off.

By offering our patients the option of sedation, Dr. Shahkarami allows each patient to have a pain-free and anxiety-free visit to the office.

You can't ask for anything better!

I've been going to SoCal Smiles for over a year. They have proved time and time again how sensitive and responsive they are. I'm a baby when it comes to dental work and ended up needing to replace a filing that was causing me a problem. They worked with me on every level and were very patient and understanding. You can't ask for anything better than that.
